MagiKats Reasoning: Your child's next favourite subject!

Throughout your child’s school life, teachers will often talk about verbal and non-verbal reasoning. It is often hailed as the skill that gives children the edge as they apply for selective school places. Whether you are looking to get your child into the local grammar or private school or not, there is no doubt that developing their reasoning skills helps your child across all their subjects.

Reasoning is often considered challenging and only for the brightest to tackle. However, with the new Reasoning programme from MagiKats, all children can learn these valuable extra skills and even enjoy it in the process!

What is reasoning?

Reasoning is the process of thinking about something in a logical way in order to form a conclusion or judgement. Reasoning usually falls into three categories, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and mathematical reasoning.

People who use reasoning:

  • show the ability to isolate and identify the various components of any given argument

  • know how to interpret patterns, number sequences or the relationships between shapes

  • can express steps in the reasoning process

Why should my child study reasoning?

At school: Reasoning is becoming more and more prominent across the school curriculum. For example, in Year 6 in England, pupils are asked to sit SATs papers called maths reasoning. In Year 7, the same pupils are then tested on their reasoning skills as part of the reassessment that takes place in the Autumn Term. In Scotland, many schools use CAT tests throughout primary and secondary, which contain all three reasoning elements.

In life: The ability to reason well can have a great impact on many careers: anything from firefighting to being a lawyer. Reasoning develops important skills that extend to all subjects and therefore also careers.

What is MagiKats Reasoning?

MagiKats Reasoning has been specifically developed to help students develop their skills. MagiKats Reasoning is a workshop-based programme that help students develop both their verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. Specially trained mentors work with students through worksheets and hands-on activities in the traditional MagiKats style to help develop students’ skills. MagiKats Reasoning is studied alongside either the regular maths and/or English programmes, for any student aged from roughly 9 to 14.

11+, Common Entrance and school entrance exams

Special programs available for students wishing to sit for these exams. They combine the reasoning programme with our regular subject programmes of maths and English and are specifically targeted to the exams for schools in your local area. We recommend that if you are looking to sit an exam in, say, September then the absolute latest your child should enrol should be the previous March. However, we recommend that it's even better if you can enrol them for at least a year ahead of the exam. To find out more please enquire at your local centre.

Your child can learn this valuable skill at a pace that suits them alongside their regular MagiKats English or maths programmes. All the best aspects of the MagiKats principles apply: small group support, multi-sensory learning and individual programmes are just three of them!
