What Your Child Will Be Learning in English and Maths This Spring
As we move through the spring term towards summer, our focus at MagiKats is on helping children build confidence, develop their understanding and apply their subject knowledge in both English and maths. Progress comes from structured, engaging learning that develops skills steadily and supports success in school and beyond.
English: Reading, Writing and Language Skills
In the earlier stages, children focus on developing reading comprehension, spelling and sentence skills. Pupils read realistic and humorous stories, practise finding information in texts and answering questions in full sentences, and learn how stories are structured before writing their own. Alongside this, children build confidence with alphabetical order and high-frequency spelling to support accuracy and organisation in writing.
As pupils move into the middle stages of their schooling, the emphasis shifts towards grammar, punctuation and clarity. Children learn how to use apostrophes, commas and sentence structures correctly, extend vocabulary using dictionaries and thesauruses, and practise explaining ideas and making simple inferences from fiction texts.
In the upper stages, students work more deliberately with language. They explore figurative language such as idioms and proverbs, improve vocabulary choices for effect, and adapt tone and style for different purposes, including formal writing. Older students also analyse viewpoint and bias, compare texts and develop persuasive writing skills.
Maths: Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving
In the early maths stages, pupils develop strong number sense through place value, counting, number patterns and simple calculations. Children also explore data handling, collecting and presenting information using charts and diagrams, while explaining their thinking to build early reasoning skills.
In the middle stages, students extend their understanding of fractions, decimals and rounding, applying these skills to multi-step problems. Perimeter and area are introduced in a structured, practical way, with pupils learning to calculate accurately and explain their methods clearly.
As students progress further in their education, maths focuses on applying knowledge to unfamiliar problems. Pupils explore factors, algebraic thinking, shape and space through 3D shapes and nets, and graphical representation using coordinates. Older students work with percentages, algebraic expressions and equations, as well as geometric reasoning involving angles.
Supporting Confidence and Progress
At MagiKats Tutoring, we focus on helping children to understand what they are learning and why it works. Our weekly workshops combine structured skill development with explanation, discussion and problem solving, helping students to build confidence that carries into the classroom and beyond.
